Successful suspense novelist Pete Monehan makes his way home
from his writing cabin to his wife and daughter. Stopping in a small town called
Haven at the run down Carl's Gas, Pete is held at gunpoint by Chuck Barnes,
the intense proprietor of the station. Escaping Chuck's grasp, Pete heads back
to the winding roads of Highway 58.
Before relief can set in, flashers light up behind him. Pete pulls to the
side of the road and Sheriff Jonah Wilhelm gets out of the cruiser behind
him. Wilhelm's a put together man, but a bit of light is missing from his
eyes, like he hasn't smiled in ages. Pete thinks Wilhelm's after him
regarding the incident at the station, but Wilhelm only cites a broken tail
light and heads back to his cruiser.
Pete starts his car, but Wilhelm pauses at the back of Pete's car, noticing
a smear of blood on the back bumper. His demeanor completely changes and he
demands Pete pop the trunk. Pete obliges and Wilhelm opens the trunk,
revealing the bloody body of a young girl.
For Pete, who thinks this is the craziest day he's ever experienced, things
